So we're looking at the end of baseball season, when we both stop traveling for the year and have the entire summer off! At least, that's when I'm trying to find a puppy by! Since we still live in an apartment complex, and let's be real here, I probably will be renting for a while longer, we're looking at small dogs.
In the meantime, I'm familiarizing myself with adoption/breeder sites. Ideally, I'd like to adopt and save some little tyke! Plus, adoption dogs aren't purebred so they can be cheaper.
But at the same time, I'd really like a long haired miniature dachshund!
Like this guy...... I found him on one of the sites and melted.

If you have a strong preference for a specific pure breed, how about breed rescue? It could be a good way to get the kind of dog you want and still help a dog in need. Some breed rescues also help find homes for mixes of that breed. My breed is Rottweilers and one of the best dogs I ever had was a (possibly) purebred Rottweiler rescued as a stray. I still try to help my breed's rescue efforts with donations and transport when I can.
Here's a place to start:

getting a dog at the animal shelter isnt always cheaper. my dad just adopted a puppy from a shelter and because multiple people wanted the dog, there was an auction of sorts... everyone put in a bid and the highest bid got the dog. kind of ridiculous, but it gives the shelters money and makes sure the dog goes to a home that can afford it i guess. happy searching though! :-)
Rescuing a dog at the animal shelter isn't always the best idea. You for one, don't know what the dogs past was like. Yeah the dog is already spayed or neutered, but may not be the best place to look.
Oh yay! Congratulations! You convinced your boyfriend as well I see! I'm very happy for you! It's a good idea to wait until the summer. It's such a pain trying to potty train our puppy in the snow! Definitely look at a breeder. It's the best guarantee of getting a healthy dog and knowing its health history. Keep us updated!
